Check out the tips below and see which factors are crucial for achieving an incredible cotton plantation.

Hello cowboys and cowgirls! Today, on the 7MBoots website, you will discover some important steps to start a cotton plantation, a plant that is the basis for practically everything we use in our society. First of all, it is necessary to emphasize that, although this activity is very profitable, to be successful, it is essential that you qualify to execute it. Check out the tips below and see what the determining factors are to achieve an incredible cotton plantation.

Soil Preparation

One of the determining steps for the success of your plantation is undoubtedly soil preparation. Therefore, if your soil has been used for a long time for the same crop, it will be necessary to plow it to prepare it for the beginning of a new planting. Additionally, if your property suffers from the presence of weeds, it is recommended to perform two plowings. In terms of depth, it is appropriate to carry out a plowing of 30 centimeters, as the roots of the cotton plant grow at an average depth of 20 centimeters.

Spacing

According to the logic of cotton plantations, the smaller the development of the crop, the closer the spacing should be, and vice versa. Therefore, it is important for the farmer to have an idea about the development of their plants based on normal expectations to get as close as possible to the ideal spacing.

Time for Planting

As in most plantations, weather conditions influence the performance of cotton crops. Therefore, it is crucial to highlight the importance of experimenting with the crop to identify how the conditions of the area affect the harvest. Moreover, the timing of the sowing process greatly influences the quantity of pests in your plantation. Thus, it is of utmost importance to study and research the possible pests that may affect your plantation according to the region to find the most suitable moments for planting while considering the use of insecticides for the soil and systemic treatments.

Sowing

To ensure greater depth during germination, the seeds should be placed between 5 and 8 cm deep. To reduce moisture, which causes issues like anthracnose and rhizoctonia, it is necessary to work with shallow furrows. Furthermore, at this stage of the cultivation, it is important to pay attention to marking the basic lines of your planting established at level. To avoid creating crops with gaps, it is necessary to consider the average of seeds: between 30 to 40 seeds per meter of furrow with minimal soil coverage, so the farmer should apply 3 to 4 sacks per hectare.

Fertilization Process

The best way to perform fertilization is alongside sowing. This process can be carried out with a simple fertilizer spreader, drawn by animal traction with a line style, or a larger fertilizer spreader, which is tractor-drawn and performs the action in two or more lines.

Thinning

Also known as thinning, this process consists of removing some plants that are considered “leftovers” to allow a significant number of plants to grow and develop healthily. It is recommended to carry out this technique between 20 and 30 days after sowing and to leave an average of 5 cotton plants per meter of row.
