How Did It Begin?

Indeed, in Brazilian lands, the first rodeo bullfighters appeared in the 1970s, along with bull riding. Initially, the sport originated in the USA, thanks to Tião Procópio.

Thus, along with the challenges, event organizers understood the importance of bullfighters, and they also decided to import this role from American festivals.

Work

Above all, the work of a rodeo bullfighter involves skill, calmness, and compassion. This is because, after the rider challenges the bull to stay on the animal for 8 seconds, the spectacle shifts to the bullfighters, whose mission is to ensure that the athletes exit the arena safely.

For this reason, bullfighters position themselves in front of the bull to distract the animal and draw its focus away from the rider. Moreover, most of the time, this work is done in pairs or trios to ensure greater safety for everyone. Many of these "angels of the arena," as they are also called, report occurrences of various kinds of fractures, such as broken bones, falls, and abrasions.

The Transition from Clowns to Bullfighters

Initially, rodeo bullfighters in the USA were known as clowns and were meant to entertain the crowd between events. However, with the growth of events and competitions, these professionals began to take on additional responsibilities. Yet, between the 1960s and 70s, still in American soil, the need for individuals to care solely for the safety of the riders during the events was observed. Thus, the profession of arena bullfighter officially emerged. Due to the professionalization of rodeos in the USA and Brazil, these professionals stopped being called clowns and had their bullfighter professions recognized and formalized.
